Hirocoin (HIRO) New home of GPU miners, X11 hashing algorithm
Soon Scrypt coins will only be mined by those in invest heavily. Hirocoin uses the X11 hashing solution by Evan Duffield. Creating an ASIC for X11 is going to be very complex making Hirocoin an ideal home for GPU miners.

This is a whopper. 240 pull requests merged. Essentially a complete rewrite that was started with the scraper (the "neural net" rewrite) in "Denise" has now been completed. Practically the ENTIRE Gridcoin specific codebase resting on top of the vanilla Bitcoin/Peercoin/Blackcoin vanilla PoS code has been rewritten. This removes the team requirement at last (see below), although there are many other important improvements besides that. Fern was a monumental undertaking. We had to encode all of the old rules active for the v10 block protocol in new code and ensure that the new code was 100% compatible. This had to be done in such a way as to clear out all of the old spaghetti and ring-fence it with tightly controlled class implementations. We then wrote an entirely new, simplified ruleset for research rewards and reengineered contracts (which includes beacon management, polls, and voting) using properly classed code. The fundamentals of Gridcoin with this release are now on a very sound and maintainable footing, and the developers believe the codebase as updated here will serve as the fundamental basis for Gridcoin's future roadmap. We have been testing this for MONTHS on testnet in various stages. The v10 (legacy) compatibility code has been running on testnet continuously as it was developed to ensure compatibility with existing nodes. During the last few months, we have done two private testnet forks and then the full public testnet testing for v11 code (the new protocol which is what Fern implements). The developers have also been running non-staking "sentinel" nodes on mainnet with this code to verify that the consensus rules are problem-free for the legacy compatibility code on the broader mainnet. We believe this amount of testing is going to result in a smooth rollout. Given the amount of changes in Fern, I am presenting TWO changelogs below. One is high level, which summarizes the most significant changes in the protocol. The second changelog is the detailed one in the usual format, and gives you an inkling of the size of this release.
Note that the protocol changes will not become active until we cross the hard-fork transition height to v11, which has been set at 2053000. Given current average block spacing, this should happen around October 4, about one month from now. Note that to get all of the beacons in the network on the new protocol, we are requiring ALL beacons to be validated. A two week (14 day) grace period is provided by the code, starting at the time of the transition height, for people currently holding a beacon to validate the beacon and prevent it from expiring. That means that EVERY CRUNCHER must advertise and validate their beacon AFTER the v11 transition (around Oct 4th) and BEFORE October 18th (or more precisely, 14 days from the actual date of the v11 transition). If you do not advertise and validate your beacon by this time, your beacon will expire and you will stop earning research rewards until you advertise and validate a new beacon. This process has been made much easier by a brand new beacon "wizard" that helps manage beacon advertisements and renewals. Once a beacon has been validated and is a v11 protocol beacon, the normal 180 day expiration rules apply. Note, however, that the 180 day expiration on research rewards has been removed with the Fern update. This means that while your beacon might expire after 180 days, your earned research rewards will be retained and can be claimed by advertising a beacon with the same CPID and going through the validation process again. In other words, you do not lose any earned research rewards if you do not stake a block within 180 days and keep your beacon up-to-date. The transition height is also when the team requirement will be relaxed for the network.
Besides the beacon wizard, there are a number of improvements to the GUI, including new UI transaction types (and icons) for staking the superblock, sidestake sends, beacon advertisement, voting, poll creation, and transactions with a message. The main screen has been revamped with a better summary section, and better status icons. Several changes under the hood have improved GUI performance. And finally, the diagnostics have been revamped.
The wallet sync speed has been DRASTICALLY improved. A decent machine with a good network connection should be able to sync the entire mainnet blockchain in less than 4 hours. A fast machine with a really fast network connection and a good SSD can do it in about 2.5 hours. One of our goals was to reduce or eliminate the reliance on snapshots for mainnet, and I think we have accomplished that goal with the new sync speed. We have also streamlined the in-memory structures for the blockchain which shaves some memory use. There are so many goodies here it is hard to summarize them all. I would like to thank all of the contributors to this release, but especially thank @cyrossignol, whose incredible contributions formed the backbone of this release. I would also like to pay special thanks to @barton2526, @caraka, and @Quezacoatl1, who tirelessly helped during the testing and polishing phase on testnet with testing and repeated builds for all architectures. The developers are proud to present this release to the community and we believe this represents the starting point for a true renaissance for Gridcoin!
Most significantly, nodes calculate research rewards directly from the magnitudes in EACH superblock between stakes instead of using a two- or three- point average based on a CPID's current magnitude and the magnitude for the CPID when it last staked. For those long-timers in the community, this has been referred to as "Superblock Windows," and was first done in proof-of-concept form by @denravonska.

How is the stability of the PYRK network achieved?

Hello, community! 👋🏻 In this post, we will tell you about Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake algorithms and why PYRK uses PoW. 🔗 A large part of 2019 was discussed in the discussion of the pricing of the key digital assets, which slightly increased, slightly higher than before. 2020 began with the confirmation of the bullish trend, taking into account the increase in bitcoin in January at Z0%. At the same time, the process between Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake (proof of share) did not complete. Emotional gain increased by the approximation of the Ethereum switch from the PoW protocol to the PoS protocol. 🔗 Coins with PoW support are mined in the sector, having a colossal share of 82.92% and a cumulative market capitalization of about $ 213, 5 billion. The predominance of market capitalization on PoW is ensured by the fact that the bitcoin dodu accounts for 65% of the total market capitalization of crypto assets. Instead of trying to use algorithms which are ASIC resistant, we propose to use algorithms which have had ASIC miners for quite some time. These are: SHA256, Scrypt, and X11. ✅ Since these miners are already in wide use, the distribution of mining should be fair and even. Furthermore, the use of three different algorithms results in a far less chance of any single person gaining a majority hash rate share. Lastly, we use the Multishield difficulty adjustment algorithm to prevent difficulty spike issues resulting from burst mining. ✅ The idea of multi-algorithm originated in Digibyte. Hey shibes, I see a lot of posts about mining lately and questions about the core wallet and how to mine with it, so here are some facts! Feel free to add information to that thread or correct me if I did any mistake.
You downloaded the core wallet
Great! After a decade it probably synced and now you are wondering how to get coins? Bad news: You don't get coins by running your wallet, even running it as a full node. Check what a full node is here. Maybe you thought so, because you saw a very old screenshot of a wallet, like this (Version 1.2). This version had a "Dig" tab where you can enter your mining configuration. The current version doesn't have this anymore, probably because it doesn't make sense anymore.
You downloaded a GPU/CPU miner
Nice! You did it, even your antivirus system probably went postal and you started covering all your webcams... But here is the bad news again: Since people are using ASIC miners, you just can't compete with your CPU hardware anymore. Even with your more advanced GPU you will have a hard time. The hashrate is too high for a desktop PC to compete with them. The blocks should be mined every 1 minute (or so) and that's causing the difficulty to go up - and we are out... So definitly check what is your hashrate while you are mining, you would need about 1.5 MH/s to make 1 Doge in 24 hours!
Let us start with a quote:
"Dogecoin Core 1.8 introduces AuxPoW from block 371,337. AuxPoW is a technology which enables miners to submit work done while mining other coins, as work on the Dogecoin block chain." - langerhans
What does this mean? You could waste your hashrate only on the Dogecoin chain, probably find never a block, but when, you only receive about 10.000 Dogecoins, currently worth about $25. Or you could apply your hashrate to LTC and Doge (and probably even more) at the same time. Your change of solving the block (finding the nonce) is your hashrate divided by the hashrat in sum - and this is about the same for Doge and LTC. This means you will always want to submit your work to all chains available!
Mining solo versus pool
So let's face it - mining solo won't get you anywhere, so let's mine on a pool! If you have a really bad Hashrate, please consider that: Often you need about $1 or $2 worth of crypto to receive a payout (without fees). This means, you have to get there. With 100 MH/s on prohashing, it takes about 6 days, running 24/7 to get to that threshold. Now you can do the math... 1 MH/s = 1000 KH/s, if you are below 1 MH/s, you probably won't have fun.
Buying an ASIC
You found an old BTC USB-miner with 24 GH/s (1 GH/s = 1000 MH/s) for $80 bucks - next stop lambo!? Sorry, bad news again, this hashrate is for SHA-256! If you want to mine LTC/Doge you will need a miner using scrypt with quite lower numbers on the hashrate per second, so don't fall for that. Often when you have a big miner (= also loud), you get more Hashrate per $ spent on the miner, but most will still run on a operational loss, because the electricity is too expensive and the miners will be outdated soon again. Leading me to my next point...
You won't make money running your miner. Just do the math: What if you would have bougth a miner 1 year ago? Substract costs for electricity and then compare to: What if you just have bought coins. In most cases you would have a greater profit by just buying coins, maybe even with a "stable" coin like Doges.
Okay, this was a lot of text and you are still on the hook? Maybe you are desperated enough to invest in some cloud mining contract... But this isn't a good idea either, because most of such contracts are scams based on a ponzi scheme. You often can spot them easy, because they guarantee way to high profits, or they fake payouts that never happened, etc. Just a thought: If someone in a subway says to you: Give me $1 and lets meet in one year, right here and I give you $54,211,841, you wouldn't trust him and if some mining contract says they will give you 5% a day it is basically the same. Also rember the merged mining part. Nobody would offer you to mine Doges, they would offer you to buy a hashrate for scrypt that will apply on multiple chains.
Maybe try to mine a coin where you don't have ASICs yet, like Monero and exchange them to Doge. If somebody already tried this - feel free to add your thoughts!

Looking at the graphs on blockchain.info, ghash.io has an estimated 37% of the hashing power for the past 24 hours. They have been growing rapidly, and were at less than 25% a month ago. If they continue to grow at this rate, it's highly possible they could control 51% of the network. They show no signs of stopping, and they've been known to use their power maliciously to double spend. I know pessimistic posts are usually frowned upon in this subreddit, but I"m just wondering what can be done about this. Ghash.io poses a threat to bitcoin, and they can potentially destroy the whole decentralization of the currency, which is exactly what Bitcoin is about. Considering their bad history of double spends and other things, I'm a bit worried. Is there any way to stop them, besides people attempting to mine for other small pools? Mining is out of the control for most people since decent ASICs are extremely expensive and mostly unprofitable. The proof of work algorithm used for Bitcoin is unlikely to change due to how difficult it would be to get everyone to adapt and for it to go smoothly. How can this be dealt with? I'm highly afraid for the future of Bitcoin.
I have 20 L3 + (11k Mh/s), I'm going to be setting up some spreadsheets that track my profits for 1-3 months using pool mining LTC with 10 L3+ and I'm going to run the other half on either Nicehash or Prohash. Which is better between the two auto Algo switching platforms and why? What kind of daily data would you guys like to see?

On April 4th, suprnova mining pool operator ocminer posted this thread notifying the crypto community and verge team that the attack had happened and how it worked.
There's currently a >51% attack going on on XVG which exploits a bug in retargeting in the XVG code. Usually to successfully mine XVG blocks, every "next" block must be of a different algo.. so for example scrypt,then x17, then lyra etc. Due to several bugs in the XVG code, you can exploit this feature by mining blocks with a spoofed timestamp. When you submit a mined block (as a malicious miner or pool) you simply set a false timestamp to this block one hour ago and XVG will then "think" the last block mined on that algo was one hour ago.. Your next block, the subsequent block will then have the correct time.. And since it's already an hour ago (at least that is what the network thinks) it will allow this block to be added to the main chain as well.
This attack given the malicious miner almost 99% of the effective hashrate, giving them the ability to perform a 51% attack and rapidly collect block rewards from thousands of blocks. In response, some exchanges have disabled deposits and some pools have disabled Verge support as they cannot currently compete. The Verge development team has said they will not rollback the chain, and has pushed an attempted fix that has been controversial about whether it will work and what unintended consequences it may have. We all know that in past years we only see asic miners dumping, while BTC is having problems with block overload. What did litecoin did? NOTHING at all? Few Chinese pools decided to block any litecoin development and usability by blocking Segwit and in the process made litecoin weak and controlled by a few greedy people! I propose that we soft fork to dual POW mining with GPU or even hard fork to some GPU heavy algo for which it is infeasible to create fast ASICs, or at least make it very expensive. It could be equihash or some variant or lyra2 algo tuned for GPU I am 100% sure 95% GPU miners would be open and eager to push segwit, that move would also make as on radar of huge number of people mining it At same way we would decentralize mining all over a world! In past I was never for hard fork or algorithm change, but if you as an investor and user of litecoin became hostage of 2-3 pools which have zero respect for the future and community, is it not right to do what majority wants?

There is no such thing as ASIC resistant PoW.
Whether someone creates an ASIC or not is not determined by how technologically difficult it is to do so, but how economically sensible it is to do so; i.e., when a coin gets more adopted and the price rises, ASICs will appear no matter what. Below is a quote from Bitcoin StackExchange which makes a good point:
It's not really "someone figured out" how to mine on FPGAs or ASICs: an intelligent first year undergraduate could port SHA256 from C to Verilog. It's more that it began to make economic sense. An often seen argument is "CryptoNight was good at resisting ASICs because it survived the first 3 years without ASICs being developed", which I disagree. CryptoNight ASICs weren't created for the first 3 years simply because the market was too small; it wasn't worthwhile to develop CryptoNight ASICs. Currently RandomX is receiving a lot of attention as being (almost) truly ASIC resistant by making PoW even more complex, but from the past experience and from logical reasoning, I have no reason to believe so.
Importance of protocol stability:
As a coin gets more widely adopted (and the price goes up), there will be more participants in the network (users, exchanges, merchants, pools, etc), which makes it more difficult to do hard forks (i.e. to force everyone to upgrade their software). Monero's 6 month fork schedule is already becoming almost unworkable due to the sheer network size, and I think they'll be forced to change this policy rather soon. Imagine a hypothetical future where one particular crypto coin becomes a globally adopted world currency. That coin cannot do hard forks every so often; maybe once every two years is already too much. Ideally, at some point, the protocol should become absolutely stable and require no more hard forks at all. With this in mind, I immediately see ASIC resistance being incompatible with this future, because hard forks (PoW changes) are rather frequently needed due to ASICs getting created faster and faster as the coin grows. ASIC resistance cannot be a sane strategy for a winning cryptocurrency.
Importance of switching now:
Going from ASIC resistant to ASIC friendly is such a radical change, and a strong opposition is naturally expected from many of the community members who have been supporting ASIC resistance. A compromise solution suggested by u/smooth_xmr is to adopt CryptonightR which Monero will switch to in the next upcoming hard fork. I think the reasoning is that CN-R is expected to be somewhat better at resisting ASICs and not much more computationally expensive than the previous CN variants (unlike RandomX), so we can wait and see how successful this will be before going full ASIC friendly. Initially I felt OK with it, but I became unsatisfied after a while of thinking for these reasons:
CryptoNight variants are orders of magnitude slower than SHA-3; the earlier we switch to SHA-3, the better for new participants who want to verify the entire blockchain from the genesis (an act of critical importance for a trustless cryptocurrency).
If we switch to CN-R now, and if ASICs do appear at some point (I believe they will), are we certain that we will switch to SHA-3 at that point? Won't there be someone claiming "I have an idea for a better ASIC resistant PoW, so let's try it and see"?
Many Monero developers admit that SHA-3 would be desirable if ASICs are available to common people. But how will this happen? I believe this won't ever happen unless we first switch to SHA-3 and help the market grow.
Arguments for ASIC resistance and their counterarguments:
"ASIC production is monopoly/duopoly/oligopoly and enables one party to gain > 50% of network hash power, hence the coin can be 51% attacked at a whim."
Counter: This dangerous state is inevitable in the early stage of the market growth. As the market matures, ASIC commoditization will definitely happen, as evidenced in Bitcoin. Also, one party having > 50% hash power doesn't necessarily mean that the party would immediately conduct the 51% attack. It may, or it may not. There certainly is a risk, and any cryptocurrency is inherently risky when it's small. Bitcoin survived this dangerous period somehow, and currently there doesn't seem to exist a real chance of 51% attack for Bitcoin. This makes for one example of success of this experiment, and I'm willing to do exactly the same experiment again, this time with SHA-3.
"ASIC friendly means common people can't participate in mining, and that's discouraging."
Counter: This is only true for a limited period of time. Initially, there's so little demand for SHA-3 ASICs that you'll be able to easily mine it using GPUs (CPUs seem already obsoleted by GPUs though). When the first few ASICs get created, they won't appear in the market, and GPU mining becomes unprofitable, to your disappointment. But as the market matures, cheaper ASICs will appear in the market which common people can buy for home use. This is evidenced in Bitcoin.
"CPU/GPU mining is good because everyone needs CPUs/GPUs and they're useful for general tasks."
Counter: This sounds nice, but ultimately it seems wrong to use these general purpose devices for a very specific task of mining. Specific task should be carried out efficiently using specifically designed devices. Also, as mentioned above, as the market matures, I believe eventually mining ASICs will become the default choice for heating equipment where cooling cost of ASICs is free. Heating is a universal use case, so eventually everyone will want mining ASICs.
"CPU mining enables hash-for-services (e.g. browser mining) which can open new possibilities for e-commerce."
Counter: This is a nice byproduct of ASIC resistance, but its importance is negligible compared to the importance of the protocol's sanity.
SHA-3 is the perfect way for Aeon to differentiate itself from Monero.
This change is radical but not stupid. Many people in the Monero community would be curious how things will play out for SHA-3 Aeon. This will surely also attract a lot of attention from the wider crypto community because Aeon will be the first CryptoNote coin that deployed SHA-3. I believe this is a very good opportunity for marketing as well. Please discuss.
Is it too late to get into Bitcoin mining? Where's the best place to start?
I've tried reading up on Bitcoin mining and there are thousands of websites all talking about thousands of different things. Do I have to build a special rig or can I use my existing PC? Have I missed the boat on this one? do I mine Bitcoin? Dodgecoin? Litecoin? Where do I even store my coins and how to I access them? Any advice on getting started would be great, thanks.
I noticed that I got my confirmations very fast. At blockexlorer I saw that in the past 80 minutes there where 20 blocks mined.
