Personally I started mining very recently and I just thought it might be interesting to see everyone's background and experience with mining, and what the people in the community is like. Mining since: Late Dec 2017 Mining rig: just 1 Rx 580 and looking to add more What got you into mining: It was actually around 2010, I discovered bitcoin. I tried to mine it with my old computer and actually got a very tiny amount of bitcoin, it was just for fun and I didn't really mine anything since then. Then fast forward to Nov 2017, a colleague was telling me about a crypto called Ether, I started looking into it and decided to try mining crypto again. Background: I work in the financial service industry. Passionate about finance, investing, and computer programming. Why do you mine: 1) For fun since I like building computers. SOLD * XFX R9 290 Reference - I did buy this card a while back used. Does include the box, but the box is a little rough. Not cat peed on it bad, but it is torn where the flaps are. I have a Radeon R9 390x to mine Bitcoin with. When I mine, despite having both my CPU and GPU checked off to work and benchmarked everything, my GPU is almost always at a hashrate of 0 (using DaggerLbry). Every once in a while, my GPU's output will spike up to $1.60/day or so and then fall back down to zero. My CPU is steadily at about 120 H/s using CryptoNight. Why is my GPU not mining properly? Thanks!

I'm thinking about sinking some major money into mining. Probably $15,000 to $20,000. Not all up front but sliding into it pretty quickly. I've got about three rigs up and running with ethereum but I have several issues I want input on. I am setting aside a $40 bounty for the three top answers ($20 for the top, two $10 for the runner ups) paid in bitcoins. I will be posting this in several places. If there is a REALLY good answer I will offer an additional $80 (total of $100) for the top answer. This is my research that may save me from making a big mistake. I live in the Midwest with temperature that hits 100f / 38c for 3 to 4 consecutive months a year. I want to run this operation in my garage. Cooling. This is by far my biggest concern. How do you think the Switch will handle Dock to Tablet and vice versa?
I'm seeing a LOT of stuff about the tablet being 720p, but I always argued that it's not a bad thing. Going a little off topic but I think it's important enough to think about during this: I'm going to be a little optimistic and say it's around the Xbox One in realtime performance, since Nvidia can squeeze out more performance per... "flop", than AMD does, as 390X vs the GTX 970 share very similar realtime performance in games (Not computation, which seems to be AMD's strength, like bitcoin mining for example) with the 970 at 3.9TFLOPS and the 390X at nearly 6. Proof: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-390X-vs-GeForce-GTX-970 So about the screen on the console itself and transitioning from that to the TV, and vice versa. Nvidia said that this is a scalable SoC and had spent half a millennium of man-time developing it with it's own exclusive architecture based on (Assuming based on blog) Pascal, API and development tools. The key word is scalable. We can assume this thing is made to dynamically change its clock speeds and rendering resolution in realtime based on power situation, this practice has been used in games like DOOM to maintain 60fps in consoles. I'm willing to bet you can't notice this when you're not trying to catch it since your time is spent enjoying the game for what it is. This is all speculation of course since we don't know much more than the name of the system and the concept of it. Seeing the trailer, it does look like there are vents in it, but it's not that the device has active cooling, but the dock could. So the tablet could act as a full console, rendering games at 900/1080p like normal when being actively cooled by the dock while also supplying efficient power without it losing charge from running the chip at the best it can. Now when it's undocked. It's easy to say only the framebuffer can just switch to 720p to fit the tablet, but that also means the battery life could be poor and the device would run hot. I'm against that idea because it simply doesn't make sense and it's too simple for Nvidia to invest all that research and development into. This could also be Nintendo's choice of using 720p for the screen. An important thing to point out is Pixels Per Inch. 720p is perfectly fine for gaming on a screen that small. People will argue about the fact that 1080p should have been used, blah blah blah, my phone has this, my tablet has that. Phones and tablets are made for reading text, yes you can play games on them, but that's not their only specific purpose. Plus, a higher PPI simply means a clearer and sharper image at lower resolutions for smaller screens. That's why the iPhone 5/5S/SE look perfectly clear at 1136x640, because of the PPI, and yes, I've owned phones with much higher PPI, one being the LG G3 what rendered in 2K. The SE still looks clear. So I'm thinking the device like I said will operate as what we're used to when docked, when you were to take it out of the dock, the tablet will change to a portable mode. This will likely switch rendering resolution to 720p maximum, and will scale as far down as 854x480, though I'm hoping for Vita's resolution of 960x540 as the absolute minimum. I know that sounds horrible, but again, look at the screen size. Games will still perform just as well as they do docked, and going down to 720p alone will save a lot of power so 540p will probably be rare. A LOT of past gen games rendered at 1024x600, Call of Duty, and even Halo 3 rendered in 540p, but you're looking at a very small screen, not a 60 inch 1080p display. You can underclock the SoC dynamically as a developer based on the resolution and maintain the same console performance but at a lower image quality to simply save battery life. If you're getting the same console resolution and performance on the go, you might as well never undock the damn thing because you won't be using it for long. If you were to look at a 540p resolution on a native 720p display on a screen that small, that's like looking at a 720p image on a 1080p display. We're okay with playing 3DS games in 240p, so I don't think there's much reason to go off at the resolution of this device. A little bonus speculation though it doesn't seem likely, I'm hoping the tablet screen will have an evolved and cheaper solution of Gsync, so incase of frame rate drops, the gameplay will always be fluid, but I think the hardware will use battery so if the case is to preserve battery, I don't think it'll happen. Sorry if this was very rambled and ranty since this was written with not much time on my hands. lol How do you guys think the Switch will handle dock and undocked modes? EDIT: My only worry is the library getting split, but I think we'll be pleasantly surprised come January with all that third party support. That list I heard was only some of the support. They have to have gone hands on with the dev kits before making their decision, and there are pretty surprising devs supporting like FromSoft.
Hi everybody! Just a little back story. I started mining a while back. Back when Bitcoin had that meteoric rise to $1k+ and litecoin and dogecoin were getting extremely popular and gaining some real market shares. I was running a 4x R9 280x set back in the day in an all utility paid place. I moved that summer and electricity wasn't included so I decided to retire my rig. I am going to move soon to an all util place again (woo-hoo!!) and wanted to get back into mining again. I'm hoping I can be provided some shortcuts into the best hashrate/$ cards out there. I was wondering how the 380x, 390, and 390x compare roughly to lets say the 280x. I've been looking around and it seems all over the place with the 390x being slightly better than the 290x. Thanks a lot! P.S. I'm going to do this mostly as a hobby because I find it extremely exciting but I still am wondering whats the most efficient card on the market from old habits. It's probably a lot harder now for GPU mining, but I'm not too concerned about ROI nor wear of cards.
Question on Ethereum mining performance over an array of GPUs
Recently, my friends have begun entering the crypto-currency mining scene. I've dabbled in the past but found that it wasn't for me. Being a fourth year engineering student, however, I am extremely curious about a discrepency I've seen. As far as I can tell the best GPU currently for mining is the R9 390X at 31MH/s. What confuses me is the fact that the 390X, with a single precision compute score of 5.91 TFLOP/s out performs the R9 Fury X (With a single percision compute score of 8.9 TFLOP/s) by almost 10MH/s. I've read that the memory bandwidth available to the GPU factors in, but the Fury X has vastly more bandwidth thatn the 390X. Both chips are also built on the same 28nm process, so lithography doesn't seem to be a factor either. I considered that clock speed might be the reason, but both cards run at the same 1000MHz factory speed. The only other thing I could think of off the top of my head would be the architecture itself. This seems like the most logical answer (seeing as the AMD cards were king over the faster 700 series cards during the Bitcoin mining craze in 2013/2014) but I'm still not entirely clear on the details. These questions have been burning me ever since Bitcoin mining was popularized and I've been dying to know for years. Any help would be greatly appreciated
[Build Help] Fallout 4 GPU Upgrade - 970, 980, or 390X? Looking for 2560x1600 @ Max Settings
I'm having trouble deciding on a new (single) GPU for Fallout 4. I haven't been much info gaming for a while so my GPU is pretty out of date. I'm running a HD5870 which is in no way adequate for running FO4 at anything close to max settings.
CPU: i7-3770k @ 4.2GHz w/ a prefab WC unit (H60 I think?)
MB: Gigabyte Z77X
SSD: 850 Evo 1TB
PSU: 620W but I've got an 850W Gold sitting around that I haven't used since I stopped Bitcoin GPU mining. Can drop this in if required
Case: Antec 300 (11"/279mm max GPU)
My display is a 30" WQXGA (2560x1600) and I'm targeting max settings at full resolution (or 1440p if I can't run it at WQXGA) I was initially considering an R390X primarily due to the value and the fact that I can get it with 8GB vram. From what I understand with mods in the future the game could likely be pushed to use quite a bit of memory (though others have said that heavily modded skyrim is fine on 4gb). My concerns with 390X are
Basically a rebranded 290X with 8GB and slight perf bump
Physical size - Most of them are 11" or larger from what I've seen which may be too big for my Antec 300
Most people say games run better on NVidia cards with similar specs, and performance comparisons I've seen w/ the 980 confirm this
I was hoping to spend around $400 on a card, though I could spend more if I had a great reason to. I'm having a hard time justifying the 980 as it seems overpriced for what you're getting. Will my CPU be a bottleneck with any of these cards? Please help me decide. Ideally I'd like to purchase on Newegg so I can use bitcoin & shoprunner. Also need help with specific manufacturers/coolers that are best (especially with my relatively small case)--I've been out of the game for a while. EDIT Thanks all! Ended up going with the MSI 390. Looking at 390 vs 970/980 instead of 390x vs 970/980 made it a pretty easy decision
Help with selecting parts for a build! (Second hand parts?)
So at the moment I'm trying to build my first Gaming PC. My budget is £700 for the actual PC, as I have extra set aside for a monitor. (Getting all my parts in the UK) I've not got any of the specs set in stone yet, and just need a hand selecting a couple of parts. In terms of performance, I'd like it to be able to run new games at 1080p 60fps+ (Ultra settings and all that jazz). As far as I can tell, this is perfectly achievable within my budget! So anyway, as my budget is pretty tight (in other words I only have ~£25 leeway), I'm really trying to get the most for my money without going over it by much. CPU stuff: So in terms of the CPU I wanted to know what to go with. I'd rather settle with intel, just because I've had a Laptop with an i5-3210M in it for a while now and not had any CPU-related issues. So far these seem to be the most highly recommended ones: i5-4960k i5-6500 i5-6600k Basically I wanna know if I would see a significant change in performance between these CPUs? I'd rather go with the cheapest I can get, so I can splash out a little more on the GPU, but there seems no point in getting a flashy card if the processor's no good. GPU: So here I've kinda rounded it down to three choices: GTX 970 4GB (~£250) Gigabyte R9 390X (~£350-£400) ouch GTX 980 4GB (£350) Now I wasn't planning to even consider the 980 originally, due to the hefty price tag, but I found a reputable store online that sells second hand ones for £350, with a 24 month warranty. Is it worth getting a second hand one? My brother said something about the warranty being invalidated if the card had been used for Bitcoin mining by the previous owner, but I find it odd that they'd even buy the card from them in the first place if that were the case. The same store sells "ATI Radeon R9 390X 8GB DX12" for £300. I have no clue what to go with here :B MOBO: Another thing I have no clue what to go with on! Seriously, I have absolutely no clue what mobo to go with. I wasn't bothered about DDR4 RAM or anything fancy. I just want a good motherboard for <£90 that will be compatible with whatever CPU I end up going with (above). I'd really appreciate the help with this.
